(Redwood City, CA) Today, Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder for the County of San Mateo, officially certified the election results for the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary Election.

“San Mateo County is pleased to announce that the first Presidential Primary election conducted under the California Voter’s Choice Act (VCA) was a complete success and enthusiastically received by the voters and jurisdictions of our county,” said Church. “The All-Mailed Ballot - Vote Center Election Model under the VCA increased voter participation and accessibility to the electoral process for all voters, particularly voters with disabilities and language minorities,” he added.

On Election Day, there were 416,827 registered voters in San Mateo County. This election saw a turnout of 54.77% of registered voters, approximately 2.98% higher than the June 7, 2016 Presidential Primary Election.

Of the 228,291 ballots cast, 195,994 (85.85%) were Vote by Mail, and 32,297 (14.15%) were cast at Vote Centers. “Voters clearly preferred to vote by mail,” stated Church. “Vote Centers were very popular on Election Day and were used primarily as ballot drop-off locations and by voters wanting to conditionally register to vote and cast provisional ballots,” added Church.

The results of the election are certified upon completion of the Canvass of the Vote during the 28 days following the election, which includes a One Percent Manual Tally of the votes to confirm the accuracy of the results.

The Official Election Results, published in the Statement of the Vote, are posted on the San Mateo County Registration & Elections website, www.smcacre.org. These official election results provide a complete picture of the election with vote totals that are broken down by precinct and by major districts.
