(Redwood City, CA) The Registration & Elections Division will begin processing ballot applications for military and overseas voters participating in the Merimont Territory Transfer Special Mail Ballot Election on June 26 and will continue through August 25, according to Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.

San Mateo County voters who are:

  • Active duty members of the Uniformed Services or Merchant Marine
  •  Spouse or dependent of an active duty member of the Uniformed Services or Merchant Marine
  • Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • U.S. citizens living abroad

may register and apply for a ballot by completing a Federal Post Card Application form (“FPCA”).

The FPCA form is available at the local U.S. Embassy or at the Federal Voting Assistance Program website at www.fvap.gov.  Military and overseas voters may also go to the California Secretary of State’s website at www.registertovote.ca.gov to register as a military or overseas voter.

When military and overseas voters register, they will decide whether they would like to receive their ballot by email, fax or postal mail.

“Our office is aware of the logistical difficulties that impact voters living abroad.  We respond immediately to requests from military and overseas voters in order to ensure that they have the opportunity to participate in the election,” Church explained.

The deadline to register to vote in this election is August 10.  Registered overseas voters may submit an overseas ballot application up to and including Election Day.  Military and overseas ballot applications submitted after August 18 should request their ballot via email or fax to ensure time for its return.

Further information for military and overseas voters is available from the Registration & Elections Division by calling 650.312.5222 or emailing registrar@smcare.org.
