(Redwood City, CA) Effective January 1, 2018, the San Mateo County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder Schedule of Fees, as set forth in County Ordinance Code 2.90.030, will be reduced to reflect a one dollar decrease in recording fees resulting from the completion of the Social Security Number Truncation Program authorized by Assembly Bill 1168.

In October 2007, the governor signed Assembly Bill 1168 requiring local agencies to redact Social Security Numbers dating back to 1980 subject to disclosure under the California Public Records Act. The bill authorized the County Recorder, upon authorization of the Board of Supervisors, to charge an additional fee of one dollar for recording the first page of each document until December 31, 2017.

The San Mateo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office has completed the redaction of Social Security Numbers dating back to 1980 and will now cease the collection of the one dollar fee effective January 1, 2018.

As part of the Department’s continuing efforts to protect the privacy and confidentiality of County residents’ records, the Department will continue the redaction of Social Security Numbers dating back to 1950.

Questions regarding the Social Security Number Truncation Program and fees may be directed to the San Mateo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office at 650.363.4000 (ext 4566).
