(Redwood City, CA) Election Day for the June 3, 2014 Statewide Direct Primary Election is less than three weeks away, and May 19 is the last day for eligible voters to file a new or updated voter registration card in order to vote in this election.

“Your vote is important,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.  “This statewide election includes state offices, county offices and ballot measures.  There are many issues on the ballot that will affect a voter’s quality of life, so I encourage all eligible voters to take the time to register and vote,” he added.

While voters may still register to vote by filling out a voter registration card, the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division urges individuals to take advantage of online registration at the California Secretary of State website http://registertovote.ca.gov.  By directly inputting their name and address, eligible voters can be sure their registration information is accurate.

A mailed registration card that is postmarked on or before May 19, 2014 will satisfy the deadline.  Voter registration cards are available at:

  • Registration & Elections Division, 40 Tower Rd, San Mateo, CA 94402
  • 555 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063
  • Public Libraries
  • City Halls
  • U.S. Postal Service offices
  • Department of Motor Vehicles offices

To be eligible to register to vote, a person must be:

  1. a U.S. citizen;
  2. at least 18 years old by Election Day;
  3. not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction; and
  4. not deemed by a court to be mentally incompetent to register and to vote.

Further, registered voters must re-register whenever they have:

  • moved to a new address
  • changed their name
  • desire to change political party affiliation

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division website provides the latest registration statistics, updated weekly at: https://www.shapethefuture.org/voterregistration/registrationstats.asp.  The website also contains a link that allows eligible and registered voters to confirm their current registration status.  On the home page, click on “Check My Registration/Access My Election Materials/View My Voter Information Pamphlet.”
