(Redwood City, CA) The Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee period begins on January 3 and concludes on February 9, 2022, at 5 p.m., for all voter-nominated state and nonpartisan countywide offices, except for the office of County Board of Supervisors, for the June 7, 2022 Statewide Direct Primary Election. The Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee period for the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors begins January 11 and closes on the same date as other offices, February 9, 2022.

The Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee period for this election begins later than previous elections due to the redistricting process, a review of population and demographic shifts, resulting in drawing new political district boundaries following the decennial census. The later start date for the Board of Supervisors reflects a requirement to begin the Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee period no sooner than 28 days following the adoption of a redistricting map. The Board gave its final approval of a new county districts map on December 14, 2021.

During the Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee period, candidates may submit a petition containing signatures of registered voters within their jurisdiction to reduce or cover their filing fee. Only signatures found to be valid by the Registration & Elections Division will reduce the filing fee. The number of signatures required to cover the filing fee varies by office. The required number of signatures to cover the filing fee for each office will be reduced due to the shortened filing period.

“Filing fees should not be a barrier for candidates running for office. I encourage all candidates to gather and file their signatures soon so they can reduce their filing fees and get a head start on their nomination requirements,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.

Signatures gathered on the petition can also be credited towards the number of signatures required by the candidate’s Nomination Papers during the candidate filing period.

Interested individuals must pick up their Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee Petitions at the Registration & Elections Division Office at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, CA 94402.
