(Redwood City, CA)  San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, Mark Church, announced the Signatures In Lieu of Filing Fee period will open on December 14, 2017 through February 7, 2018 for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election.

“In accordance with Assembly Bill No. 469 approved by Governor Jerry Brown on October 15, 2017, the Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee filing period will commence 15 days earlier than previous elections,” explained Mr. Church. “I encourage candidates to pay attention to the differences the new law brings to the Signatures in Lieu process.”

Under the new law, the Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee filing period will be the same for all candidates. In previous elections, all candidates shared the same starting date for filing, but the filing period ended 15 days earlier for judicial candidates.

The new law has also reduced the number of signatures required to cover the filing fee and increased the value for each signature gathered by candidates.

The Signatures In Lieu of Filing Fee period allows candidates to submit a petition containing signatures of registered voters within their jurisdiction to reduce or cover the filing fee.

The number of signatures required to cover the filing fee varies by office. Each signature is assigned a monetary value based on the office. Valid signatures will reduce the filing fee.

Additionally, all valid signatures gathered on the Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee Petition can be credited towards the number of signatures required by the candidate’s Nomination Papers during the candidate filing period.

Interested individuals must pick up their Signatures in Lieu of Filing Fee Petitions at the Registration & Elections Division, 40 Tower Road, San Mateo, CA 94402.
