(Redwood City, CA) Schools throughout the Peninsula have sprung into action in response to San Mateo County’s call for student election officers for the upcoming November 6, 2012 Presidential General Election. Fifteen (15) schools will be participating in the program and 564 students have signed up. “We have great schools in San Mateo County and when this opportunity became available to their students, the students responded. We’re thrilled to have so many students actively serving on Election Day,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder for San Mateo County.
The deadline to apply was September 14. Participating schools include:
- Aragon High School
- Burlingame High School
- Carlmont High School
- Crystal Springs Uplands School
- Half Moon Bay High School
- Hillsdale High School
- Menlo-Atherton High School
- Mills High School
- Oceana High School
- Redwood High School
- San Mateo High School
- Sterne High School
- South San Francisco High School
- Westmoor High School
- Woodside High School
“This program creates a unique opportunity for students to participate in our democracy, witness the participation of voters in their own community, and provide a critical service to voters at the polls,” said Church.
Participating student election officers must be:
- U.S. citizens,
- A resident or student in San Mateo County,
- 16 years of age,
- Hold a 2.5 g.p.a.,
- And have the permission of their parents (or guardians) and teachers.
The California student election officer program was established in 1996 to allow students the opportunity to get an inside look at American democracy in action. Student election officers are critical members of the Election Day team, and provide support to Elections staff by assisting voters and managing polling place operations.
