(Redwood City, CA) Today Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder for the County of San Mateo, officially certified the election results for the November 7, 2017 Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election.

“The November 7, 2017 election was the first major election held under the provisions of SB 415 The Voter’s Participation Rights Act. This new law requires most jurisdictions to move their governing board elections to even-numbered years by 2022. As a result, only 12 jurisdictions, serving 172,464 registered voters participated in this election” said Church. “It is one of the smallest local consolidated elections held in recent memory. Voter turnout was it 27.35%.”

Of the 47,173 ballots cast, 38,333 (81%) were Vote by Mail and 8,579 (18%) were cast at the polls. During the early voting period, 261 ballots were cast by voters at the Voting Centers.

During this election, there were 207 reporting precincts with 159 of these precincts served by polling places. The remaining balance were Vote by Mail Precincts or there were no registered voters located in these precincts. Over 600 Poll Workers served at polling places on November 7.

“We truly appreciate the outstanding men, women, and students who served our voters on Election Day. Their commitment and professionalism was critical to the success of conducting the election,” Church added.

The Chief Elections Officer officially certifies the results once the Canvass is completed in the 30 days following an election. During the Canvass, the Vote by Mail ballots and the paper and electronic ballots cast at the Registration & Elections offices and the polls are added to the semi-official vote totals. Afterwards, a One Percent Manual Tally of the votes is conducted to confirm the accuracy of the election results.

The Official Election Results, published in the Statement of the Vote, are posted on the San Mateo County Registration & Elections website, www.shapethefuture.org. These official election results provide a complete picture of the election with vote totals that are broken down by precinct and the method in which the ballots were cast. The Precinct Report is also available online and lists the ballots cast and turnout on a precinct-by-precinct basis.
