(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer for the County of San Mateo, officially certified the election results today for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election.
“San Mateo County is pleased to announce that the implementation of the California Voter’s Choice Act for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election was a complete success and enthusiastically received by the voters and jurisdictions of our county,” said Church. “The All-Mailed Ballot/Vote Center Election Model increased voter participation and accessibility to the electoral process for all voters, particularly voters with disabilities and language minorities,” he added.
On Election Day there were 388,298 registered voters in San Mateo County. This election saw a turnout of 44.34% of registered voters, approximately 17% higher than the last Statewide Direct Primary Election in 2014.
Of the 172,168 ballots cast, 159,531 (92.66%) were Vote by Mail and 12,637 (7.34%) were cast at Vote Centers. “Voters clearly preferred to vote by mail.” stated Church. “Vote Centers were very popular on Election Day and were used primarily as ballot drop-off locations and by voters wanting to conditionally register to vote and cast provisional ballots,” added Church.
The Chief Elections Officer officially certifies the results of the election upon completion of the Canvass of the Vote, which is completed during the 30 days following an election. A One Percent (1%) Manual Tally of the votes is conducted to confirm the accuracy of the election results.
The Official Election Results, published in the Statement of the Vote, are posted on the San Mateo County Registration & Elections website, www.smcacre.org. These official election results provide a complete picture of the election with vote totals that are broken down by precinct and the method in which the ballots were cast. The Precinct Report is also available online and lists the ballots cast and turnout on a precinct-by-precinct basis.
