Alternate: David Tom, Elections Manager

(Redwood City, CA) On Thursday, March 15th at 11 a.m., the Elections Office and the Secretary of States’ Office will conduct random alpha drawings.  The random alpha drawings are done to determine the order of candidates’ names on the ballot and to assign letter names to measures that will appear on the ballot for the June 5, 2012 Presidential Primary Election.

“The random alpha drawing is an important and impartial step in the process of creating the official ballot,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.  Election officials and interested members of the public and/or the media will draw letters out of a hat (or basket) to determine the letter to be assigned to identify each measure.  Measures will be listed on the ballot in alphabetical order according to the letters assigned in this drawing.  “In San Mateo County, our staff will use a separate random alpha drawing to determine the order of candidates’ names for state assembly, state senate and central committees on the ballot.  I encourage the public to observe the process at our office at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo,” Mark Church added.

Information regarding candidates and the local measures is available on the Elections website, at https://www.shapethefuture.org/elections/2012/june/default.asp.

For more information about the drawing, please contact Filing Officer Meaghan Hassel Shearer at 650.312.5293 or mhasselshearer@smcare.org.
