Process to begin for those seeking offices for the November 8 ballot

Redwood City, CA –The filing period for the nomination papers of write-in candidates for every elective office appearing on the ballot for the November 8, 2011 election (a Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election) was announced today by San Mateo County's Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, Mark Church. "To qualify for the November election, potential write-in candidates must file their nomination papers between 8:00 AM on Monday, September 12 and 5:00 PM on Tuesday, October 25."  

Eligible persons seeking to conduct a write-in candidacy must file their nomination documents at the appropriate official filing locations, as follows:  (1) for city/town offices, file at the office of the city or town clerk; and (2) for school district offices or special district offices, file at the San Mateo County Elections Office at 40 Tower Road. Candidates are advised to schedule an appointment for the filing, to ensure adequate time for instruction and document processing. Those interested in school and special district offices should contact the Filing Officer, Megan Krat, at  (650.312.5293) or email (mkrat@smcare.org) to schedule an appointment.

Potential write-in candidates must file a Statement of Write-In Candidacy, providing the candidate’s name and residential address and the candidate's declaration of candidacy for a specifically named office and specific election date. For certain offices, they must also file a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700).

To be an eligible write-in candidate, the person must be a voter in the district or political subdivision in which they are seeking election. No filing fee or charge shall be required, except in the case of a candidate for city office, as provided in Section 10228 of the California Elections Code. After having qualified as a write-in candidate by filing the necessary documents, no information about the candidate will be included in the printed voting materials provided to voters:  neither in the Official Ballot, nor in the Sample Ballot, nor in the Official Voter Information Pamphlet.
