(Redwood City, CA) The filing period for potential write-in candidates intending to run for contests on the November 8, Presidential General Election will open on Monday, September 12, 2016.

“I encourage all interested individuals to begin the filing process as soon as possible to allow enough time to complete all requirements,” advised Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. 

Potential write-in candidates should schedule a filing appointment as soon as possible to ensure adequate time for instruction and document processing. Interested parties may contact Michael Lui, Filling Officer, at 650.312.5238 or email him at mlui@smcare.org to schedule an appointment.

Eligible persons seeking write-in candidacy must fulfill the following requirements:

  • File a Statement of Write-in Candidacy. The statement is comprised of the candidate’s name, residential address and his/her declaration of candidacy for a specifically named office and specific election date.
  • For certain offices, potential write-in candidates must also file a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700).

No information concerning write-in candidates will be printed on the official voting materials provided to voters by the Registration & Elections Division. However, the Roster of Candidates is updated each time a new candidate files and it can be viewed online at www.shapethefuture.org. Additionally, a list of qualified write-in candidates will be available at Voting Centers and polling places on Election Day. 

Fees: There is no fee or charge for the filing. 
Filing Deadline: 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016
Filing Location: San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo.
