(Redwood City, CA) The period to file as a write-in candidate for contests on the June 7, 2016 Presidential Primary Election opens Monday, April 11, 2016. Eligible persons seeking to become a write-in candidate must file a Statement of Write-in Candidacy and other documentation by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 with the San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division. The office is located at 40 Tower Road, San Mateo.

Candidates are advised to schedule an appointment for the filing to ensure adequate time for instruction and document processing. Those interested should contact the Filing Officer, Michael Lui, at 650.312.5238 or email mlui@smcare.org to schedule an appointment.

"I encourage all interested individuals to start the filing process as soon as possible in order to allow enough time to complete all requirements," said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.

Potential write-in candidates must file a Statement of Write-In Candidacy, providing the candidate’s name and residential address and the candidate’s declaration of candidacy for a specifically named office and specific election date. For certain offices, they must also file a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700). There is no filing fee or charge.

No information concerning write-in candidates will be printed on official voting materials provided to voters by the Registration & Elections Division. The Roster of Candidates, which is updated when new candidates file, can be viewed online at www.shapethefuture.org. A list of qualified write-in candidates will be available at Voting Centers and polling places on Election Day.

June 2016 Election will have Traditional Voting Opportunities

Unlike the November 2015 All-Mailed Ballot Election, the June 2016 Presidential Primary Election is a traditional election with neighborhood polling places for most county residents. Voters will be assigned a specific polling place that will be indicated on the back cover of the Sample Ballot and Official Voter Information Pamphlet. It will also be listed on our website www.shapethefuture.org under Access My Election Materials, starting April 28. Voters who live in precincts with less than 250 voters will be sent a Vote by Mail ballot.

Only voters who are permanently signed up to vote by mail or who request a ballot for the June 7, 2016 election will be mailed a ballot on May 9 or later. Voters may request a ballot on Access My Election Materials, starting April 28, or by completing the request form included in the county Sample Ballot Pamphlet. Voters can also choose to vote by mail permanently by completing the online application form.
