1400 Election Officers will serve in the November 5 Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election

(Redwood City, CA) Training for the 1400 Election Officers who will manage 349 precincts for the November 5, 2013 Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election will begin on October 7 announced Mark Church, San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. 

To serve as an Election Officer, individuals must attend formal training. A total of 48 classes will be offered in public facilities throughout San Mateo County during the month of October. Class sign-ups are done online or over the phone; the telephone number is 650.286.2810. The training schedule and online reservation application are located on www.shapethefuture.org under the Election Officers tab.

The San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division offer 4 different classes to Election Officers depending on their level of expertise.  

  1. “Beginners” class is for Election Officers who are new or have very little experience working at the polls on Election Day. The Elections Officers will learn basic poll operations and receive hands-on training in assembling, operating, and breaking down the eSlate voting equipment. 
  2. “Intermediate” class is for Election Officers who worked at least two San Mateo County elections. This class is primarily a lecture with hands-on exercises on all poll activities built into the curriculum. 
  3. “Inspector” class is primarily a lecture with hands-on exercises on the additional responsibilities unique to Inspectors. 
  4. “Advanced” class is for Election Officers who worked at least 10 elections. This class is limited to 30 attendees.

Additionally, all Election Officers have the opportunity to gain experience on any Election Day procedure in the county’s Practice Lab. “We open a practice lab,” said Mark Church. “The practice lab is designed to ensure Election Officers are able to easily help all voters on Election Day,” he added. “The practice lab is set up at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo at the Registration and Elections Division and supervised by staff trainers.”
