(Redwood City, CA) Training for the 1400 Election Officers who will manage 350 precincts for the November 4, 2014 Statewide General Election will begin on October 6, announced Mark Church, San Mateo County’s Chief Elections Officer and Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.

To serve as an Election Officer, individuals must attend formal training.  A total of 59 classes will be offered in public facilities throughout San Mateo County during the month of October.  Class sign-ups are done online or over the phone; the telephone number is 650.286.2810.  The training schedule and online reservation application are located on www.shapethefuture.org under the Election Officers tab.

The San Mateo County Registration and Elections Division offers 4 different classes to Election Officers depending on their level of expertise.

  1. “Beginners” class is for Election Officers who are new or have very little experience working at the polls on Election Day.  The Election Officers will learn basic poll operations and receive hands-on training in assembling, operating, and breaking down the eSlate voting equipment.
  2. “Intermediate” class is for Election Officers who worked at least two San Mateo County elections.  This class is primarily a lecture with hands-on exercises on all poll activities built into the curriculum.
  3. “Inspector” class is primarily a lecture with hands-on exercises on the additional responsibilities unique to Inspectors.
  4. “Advanced” class is for Election Officers who worked at least ten elections.  This class is limited to thirty attendees.

Additionally, all Election Officers have the opportunity to gain experience on any Election Day procedure in the county’s Practice Lab. “The Practice Lab provides Election Officers the opportunity to practice in advance of Election Day so they are better able to serve the voters of San Mateo County,” said Church.  “The Practice Lab is set up at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo at the Registration and Elections Division and supervised by staff trainers,” he added.
