(Redwood City, CA) Students from South San Francisco to Redwood City are taking part in the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division student election officer program for the June 7, 2016 Presidential Primary Election. The program, called democracyLIVE!, was established to provide students greater awareness of the election process, the rights and responsibilities of voters, as well as to provide additional Election Officers.

“This is a unique opportunity for students to witness democracy in action and participate by providing service to voters at the polls,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder for San Mateo County. “Student election officers are critical members of the Election Day team.”

End-of-year school schedules may make it difficult for graduating seniors to participate in Primary Elections. Now is a good opportunity for current high school juniors to step-up and serve in the June election. When the General Election occurs in November, these students will be well-prepared to serve as Election Officers.

The deadline for students to apply is May 27, 2016. Spanish and Chinese language speakers are encouraged to join the program.

The eighty (80) students currently participating represent six (6) schools, including:

  1. Aragon High School
  2. El Camino High School
  3. Hillsdale High School
  4. Mills High School
  5. South San Francisco High School
  6. Woodside High School

Participants must be:

  • Enrolled in high school or 2016 high school graduates
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • A resident or student in San Mateo County
  • 16 years of age or older
  • Hold a minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
  • Have the written permission of their parents (or guardians) and school

Participants will receive training in advance of the election. Student Election Officers receive a stipend ranging from $115.00 to $140.00 for the day, plus $25.00 for the time in the training if they serve on Election Day.
