(Redwood City, CA) The San Mateo County Elections Office will hold a candidate seminar for potential candidates running for office or considering a run for office in the upcoming Board of Supervisors Special Election on May 3, 2011.  The seminar will be held on January 7, 2011 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo. Due to the potentially small number of attendees, the Candidate Seminar and Voter Data Seminar will be combined and offered as one. Candidates and their staff are welcome; RSVPs are requested. The seminar is open to the public.

“We have a tradition of offering candidate seminars to help ensure that all candidates are on equal footing with access to the information and requirements of running for office. Once the mechanics of running for office are understood, candidates can focus on their campaigns,” explained Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder.

Current public office holders and newcomers alike can benefit from information provided at the seminar. And, all attendees will be given a bound copy of the updated 50 page Candidate’s Guide. The guide is also available on www.shapethefuture.org, the Elections web site. “The intent of the workshop is to encourage interest in public service by providing helpful guidance and resources to candidates at the time it is needed,” explained Church.

“At the seminar, elections staff will review the laws, deadlines, and procedures that apply to Board of Supervisor candidates and campaigns,” said Church. Topics covered will include campaign finance reports, the filing process, the calendar, required forms, candidate statements, important deadlines, voter registration guidelines, the use of Vote by Mail sign-up forms in campaign literature, requirements for signs, and various election resources, rules and regulations for campaign activities and how to access and use the voter registration data as allowed by law.

To RSVP for the seminar, attendees may contact Megan Asmus, Candidate Filing Officer, at 650.312.5293 or e-mail her at masmus@smcare.org . Attendees are asked to provide their name and the number of persons attending.
