(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, announced the opening of the candidate filing period for the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election.

For candidates seeking elected office, the filing period opens at 8 a.m. on July 18 and closes at 5 p.m. on August 12. For offices without an eligible incumbent seeking re-election, the candidate filing period is open for an additional five (5) calendar days and closes at 5 p.m. on August 17.

“The quality of life in our communities is determined by the character and integrity of our elected officials and governing bodies,” said Church. “The success of our democracy depends on engaged citizens coming forth to serve their communities in an elected public office.” 

Persons interested in serving their communities in an elected office should call San Mateo County Candidate Filing Officer, Michael Lui, at 650.312.5238, to make an appointment to review the steps, forms and requirements to run for office.

The offices that will be up for election on the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election ballot include:

Federal

  • President/Vice President: 4-year term
  • U.S. Senator: 6-year term
  • U.S. Representative in Congress, Districts 14 and 18: 2-year term each district

State

  • State Senator, Districts 11 and 13: 4-year term each district
  • State Assembly, Districts 19, 22 and 24: 2-year term each district

County

  • County Board of Supervisors, 5th District Run-off: 4-year term

Regional Offices

  • Midcoast Community Council: three 4-year terms and one 2-year term
  • Pescadero Municipal Advisory Council, District 1 and Member At Large: 4-year term each seat

Municipal Council Members and Officers (All 4-year terms)

  • Town of Atherton, Town Council: two
  • Town of Colma, Town Council: three
  • City of Daly City, City Council: two
  • City of Daly City, City Clerk: one
  • City of Daly City, City Treasurer: one
