(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, announced the opening of the candidate filing period for the November 6, 2018 Statewide General Election.

For candidates seeking elected office, the filing period opens at 8 a.m. on July 16 and closes at 5 p.m. on August 10.  For offices without an eligible incumbent seeking re-election, the candidate filing period is open for an additional five (5) calendar days and closes at 5 p.m. on August 15.

“The November 2018 Statewide General Election will see a much larger number of offices than normally appear on the ballot in San Mateo County,” said Church.  “This is a direct result of Senate Bill 415, also known as the California Voter Participation Rights Act, which requires local jurisdictions to move their governing board elections to even-numbered years.”

Persons interested in running for a regional district, school district or special district office should call Candidate Filing Officer, Michelle Yue, at 650.312.5293, to make an appointment to review the steps, forms and requirements to run for office.  Those interested in running for a city elected office should contact their City Clerk.

Please refer to the attached list of the local offices that will be up for election on the November 6, 2018 Statewide General Election ballot.

New Election Model for November 6, 2018
The November 6, 2018 Statewide General Election will be the second election conducted under the California Voter’s Choice Act model.  Traditional polling places will be replaced by Vote Centers, which will be open for voting for a greater period, and will offer expanded voter services including voter registration, multilingual assistance, and disabled access voting options.  Every registered voter will also receive a Vote-by-Mail Ballot, which can be returned with no postage required in any mailbox or special ballot drop-off boxes located throughout the county.
