Redwood City, CA –Those interested in running for office in the November 8 Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election have until 5 p.m. on Friday, August 12 to file their nomination papers with the San Mateo County Elections Office. The same deadline applies to local jurisdictions that intend to place a local measure on the November ballot.
The candidate filing period for the November election opened on July 18; the law provides candidates with a 26-day window in which to file the necessary paperwork. To date, numerous candidates have filed nomination papers to run for local office in the 13 cities, 14 school districts, and 17 special districts with contests to fill governing board positions. “Local jurisdictions have also placed various measures on the ballot for voter consideration in addition to the candidates seeking elective office,” said Mark Church, Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder. “Information regarding each measure is posted online as it is received.” The filing deadline for placing a measure on the ballot coincides with the close of the candidate filing period on August 12 at 5 p.m.
The candidate filing period will automatically be extended for 5 calendar days (until August 17) for any office where an eligible incumbent does not file to run for reelection.
The close of the candidate filing period also marks the opening of the 10-day public review period when any member of the public has the opportunity to review resolutions, ordinances, tax rate statements, and candidate statements. Any registered voter of the election jurisdiction, or the elections official, may seek a writ of mandate or injunction requiring any or all of the materials to be amended or deleted. This initial public review period will run from August 12 to August 22.
