(Redwood City, CA) “Olivia is the most popular name for girls, and Lucas is the most popular name for boys in 2014,” announced Mark Church, San Mateo County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder and Chief Elections Officer.

There were 5,879 new babies born in San Mateo County in 2014.  The total number of girls born in 2014 was 2,827 compared to 2,720 born the year before; the total number of boys born in 2014 was 3,052 compared to 2,872 born the year before. “The total number of births recorded in San Mateo County in 2014 increased by 287 or 5% from the prior year,” Church said.

“Many of previous year’s favorite names for both boys and girls made it into the Top 10 Names for 2014,” he added.

The Top Ten Names lists were calculated with birth data through December 31, 2014. "The statistics show that both the number of babies born and the most popular names bestowed upon boys and girls has varied just a little over the past five years," Church noted. "Last year continued these trends," he said.

About half of most popular baby names for both boys and girls remain on the list each year, gaining or losing a little bit in rank.
