Redwood City, CA – There were 5,478 new babies born in San Mateo County in 2010 and slightly more of them were boys (51.6 percent boys/49.4 percent-girls).  Last year, Isabella was the most popular name for girls and Ethan was the most popular name for boys.

However, the name Sophia is the runaway favorite name for girls if you accept both spellings of the name, Sophia (third place) and Sofia (sixth place).  In that case, 57 baby girls were named Sophia while 35 baby girls were named Olivia, and 32 were named Mia.

The names Ethan, Jacob and Alexander top the list for little boys.  The names Daniel, Joshua and William were in a tie for fourth place.

The top ten names for babies born in San Mateo County in 2010 were as follows:

The Top Ten Names lists were calculated with birth data through December 31, 2010.

“The statistics below show that both the number of babies born and the most popular names bestowed upon boys and girls has varied just a little over the past five years,” noted

San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-Clerk-Recorder Mark Church. “Last year continued these trends.”

About half of most popular baby names for both boys and girls remain on the list each year, gaining or losing a little bit in rank.
