Candidate Filing Period Opens on February 12 for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election

(Redwood City, CA) Mark Church, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, announced the opening of the candidate filing period for the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election.
For candidates seeking elected office, the filing period opens at 8 a.m. on February 12 and closes at 5 p.m. on March 9. For offices without an eligible incumbent seeking re-election, the candidate filing period is open for an additional five (5) calendar days and closes at 5 p.m. on March 14.
“The vitality of local government depends upon the willingness of responsible leaders to step forward and offer themselves in service to the community,” said Church. “There are many opportunities available to serve with 19 County, 12 State and 3 Federal elected offices open for election this year.”

The offices that will be up for election on the June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election ballot include:
- U.S. Senator: one 6-year term
- U.S. Representative – 14th District, 18th District: one 2-year term each
- Governor: one 4-year term
- Lieutenant Governor: one 4-year term
- Attorney General: one 4-year term
- Secretary of State: one 4-year term
- State Treasurer: one 4-year term
- State Controller: one 4-year term
- Insurance Commissioner: one 4-year term
- State Superintendent of Public Instruction: one 4-year term
- State Board of Equalization, 2nd District: one 4-year term
- State Assembly – 19th District, 22nd District, 24th District: one 2-year term each
- Board of Supervisors – 2nd Supervisorial District, 3rd Supervisorial District: one 4-year term each
- Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder: one 4-year term
- Controller: one 4-year term
- Coroner: one 4-year term
- District Attorney: one 4-year term

New Election Model for June 5, 2018
The June 5, 2018 Statewide Direct Primary Election will be the first election conducted under the California Voter’s Choice Act (VCA). The VCA will implement an All-Mailed Ballot/Vote Center model, with every registered voter receiving a Vote-by-Mail Ballot through the mail. The Vote-by-Mail Ballot may be returned by mail, dropped off at any Vote Center or Special Ballot Drop Boxes located throughout the county. Return postage will be prepaid for those voters wishing to return their ballots through USPS.
Vote Centers will replace traditional polling places and will be open for voting throughout the early voting period. Vote Centers will be providing expanded voter services such as voter registration, multilingual assistance, and disabled access voting options.
